Sta. Rita Hills
Inspired by the unique geography and strong ocean influence of our area, a small handful of like minded colleagues defined and petitioned what would become the Sta. Rita Hills in 1997. Led by pioneer, Richard Sanford, who first planted in 1970, this group carefully considered wind trajectory, fog patterns, topography and soil profiles to identify a concise and cohesive sub appellation within the larger Santa Ynez Valley.
Several years after submittal the AVA was granted by the BATF in 2001. Over the past twenty years from 1997 - 2016 the area has gone from approximately 500 acres of planted vineyard land to over 3,500 with a presence and recognition all across the globe.
